Thank you to the girls in Girl Scout Troop 522 for all of their help

July 24, 2010 News, Volunteers No Comments

The troop and their leaders came to visit The Hermitage this Spring and helped clean litter boxes and wash shelves.

Better yet, they played with the kitties who relished in the affection.

The Troop raised a large amount of money which they donated to assist with medical bills for the kitties. They also collected metal cans for our “Cans For Cats” program along with  much needed blankets, toys, bedding, food and money to assist with medical bills.

Today, the students of The Vantana Institute/Old Vail Middle School presented us with a $310 donation check. They raised the funds through a class run yard sale. We thank them for their continued hard work in helping the cats of The Hermitage Cat Shelter.

A Letter from Sarah

I have been volunteering at The Hermitage Cat Shelter for about four weeks now and I really love it. I love watching the cats play while I’m eating lunch. I love to watch all the silly little antics of the cats when they are playing, like Salem and Twitch wrestling each other making all sorts of silly squeals and grunts. I enjoy sitting in the different rooms seeing which of the cats is going to sit on my lap first. I enjoy petting and talking to the cats. I enjoy watching the cats that aren’t quite ready to sit on my lap come to me and ask me to pet them on their head and talk to them. I like making the cats happy by providing them with a lap to sit on, by petting them and by talking to them.

Some of the cats just want me to stand there by them and pet them on the head and talk to them, while others like to sit on my lap to get petted. I think it’s cool that a lot of the cats that don’t usually sit on people’s laps sit on my lap now. The cats seem to realize that I’m a cat person and are getting quite comfortable around me. I liked helping Nixon climb up on to my lap to get some quality petting time. I love all the silly sounding asthmatic noises Nixon makes due to his asthma. Even Miss Kitty sits on my lap now, though most of the time since my first two weeks she is one of several cats that keeps coming over to me and looking up at my lap waiting for either Nixon or Dottie to vacate my lap so they can sit on my lap.

Last week I got a kick out of watching Salem, Twitch, and Simon all came around on the table to check out my lunch and play in the tunnels. Dottie was sitting in my lap and I was eating my sandwich when she chose to take the last quarter of my sandwich for herself but then let one of the other cats have some of the sandwich too.

The Hermitage Cat Shelter is a No Kill shelter, and I like that. I look forward to each Wednesday to see who will sit on me from week to week and who will let me pet them from week to week now. I think I will be volunteering at The Hermitage Cat Shelter for a long time.
